Hi, and welcome to The Novel Business. My name is Patricia McClelland Terrell. I wanted to give you a little bit about my background so you can see why I created this website for authors and small publishers.
I have been a published author since 1984 and I’ve been writing full-time since 2002. My pen name was originally Patricia McClelland but that all changed in 2002 with my first suspense/thriller. Since then, I have written under the pen name p.m.terrell.
I’ve had quite a bit of success with my writing – 20 books and counting in several genres. Over the years, I’ve had quite a few authors and small publishers ask me for advice on everything from starting a business, traditional vs. self-publishing, book designs and formatting interiors, print runs vs. POD, and most of all, marketing success.
I co-founded The Book ‘Em Foundation and founded the annual Book ‘Em North Carolina Writers Conference and Book Fair. I chaired the event for the first five years and then transitioned it to the fabulous team at Robeson Community College to sustain it well into the future.
The purpose of the Book ‘Em event is to help all authors, from newbies to New York Times bestselling authors, by providing panel discussions and solo talks designed to educate the authors through the rapidly changing publishing industry. It also raises awareness of the direct link between high crime rates and high illiteracy rates, and a portion of all book sales goes to increasing literacy in the community.
As a result of my work with BENC, I found even more writers emailing me or connecting on social media with so many questions that I realized I could spend my entire work week answering them. This website was created out of a willingness to help other authors in a challenging and competitive industry and also provide a forum where they could connect with one another.
As this website officially launches in January 2017, there will be two areas: one free and one paid. Both will enable the writer to access information that I hope you’ll find helpful. The paid version will have much more in the way of strategy and tactics, including detailed videos and sample documents such as contracts (for small publishers offering traditional author contracts), press releases, and much more. The paid version will enable me to continue the website well into the future.
If you’d like to learn more about me, my books and my career prior to entering the writing industry, my other website is www.pmterrell.com or catch the video below to hear about my background in my own words.
